Details on Dinner!

Saturday night dinner –

We got to Ai Gondoleri just a few minutes after 7, and were the first ones there! Nice corner table. First they brought out a large goblet full of fresh cut up veggies like carrots, red and green peppers, celery and fennel, to be used with the little dabs of oil and mustard that were at each plate. Very good! They also start each meal with a glass of Prosecco, so we were fine there too! Interesting menu – for Venice, NO fish at all on the menu! However, there were white truffles from Alba, so I was happy! Mom ordered pork ribs with potatoes; R had their wild mushroom starter (they have the most beautiful plates!) followed by their steak in a Barolo (red wine) sauce with potatoes – it was wonderful! And I had their vegetable medley with pea coulee to start, with their ravioli with white alba truffles for a main course. Dessert for Mom was their raspberry Bavarian, and I had their fresh strawberries and lemon whipped mouse – also, some incredible dessert wine; felt like a hummingbird; sugar water, but it was great! (Did get the name: Bianco di Ornella; highly recommended!) All in all a good experience, but we both thought the menu was WAY overpriced!

We then walked Mom back to the hotel as she wanted to retire for the night, and R and I hopped on a #1 and rode around the lagoon a bit. Lovely weather, beautiful scenery, EXCEPT for the incredibly HUGE Holland America ship that was parked right on the quay past St. Mark’s! Maybe Venice overbooked their cruise ships, as all the others are moored down at the end near Tronchetto, before you get to the main part of Venice – but this puppy was right in the middle of everything! NOT a good thing!

Much love,
