Why is it always about the food...?

Thursday evening, 2 September

Well! Time for dinner! (At last, says R, considering that he had nothing for lunch…but a VERY nice breakfast!) I had a Magnum Classic…

Our original plan had been to go to Au Fin Gourmet, a highly recommended restaurant in one of the lovely Pau parks. We actually got as far as the front door, where we had a look at the menu – and there was really nothing there I wanted to eat – it was a very adventurous menu, but looked very much “over the top” – sauces on their sauces, so we headed back UP the hill toward the center of old town. There we found Le St. Jacques, a bit off to one side in the main square. Had the place almost to ourselves! Obviously a family run place, we started with glasses of Kir Royale – framboise and champagne…yum! We both ordered the 25 Euro menu – R started with a wonderful appertizer of goat cheese topped with apples and pesto, all done up in a wonderful phylo dough package; looked like a little sac! My appetizer wasn’t quite as cute, but was fabulous! Small scallops on a bed of buttered leeks with cheese on top and broiled briefly. FABULOUS! Then the main courses: For R - slices of duck breast with cooked, sliced apples and a mound of wonderful potatoes. I had the beef, cooked in a rosemary sauce (not my favorite…) but the beef was terrific. For dessert, R had the apple tarte and I had a chocolate sundae, everything washed down by a great French white Bordeaux.

Waddled back around 10 p.m. Great dinner; lovely city! We will definitely be back to Pau!

Much love,
