A last beautiful sunny day in Paris!

Friday, 17 September 2010

Bonjour!

Well, our last full day in Paris for this trip! Nice evening last night, even though I couldn’t get these lazy folks to go for a walk with me…so, BTOR for dinner along with a good salad with a lovely mustard vinaigrette – trying to use everything up before we leave! Great beef from the market at Rue Mouffetard – much better than that at Bon Marche, surprisingly enough! Did manage to find a football (soccer, to most people. R) match – Sevilla, Spain vs. Paris St. Germain on TV – PSG won, 1-0 in case you’re interested!

Up this morning and the usual for breakfast. First stop was the Luxembourg ticket office where we purchased tickets to Orly airport tomorrow. Then out to catch the #27 to take us to the Louvre. Had another good look around the Egyptian collection, and this time we actually found the famous zodiacal calendar that had been off exhibit for years! It’s displayed on the ceiling of a small antechamber – very hard to find! In fact, R had to find a guard to help him! We walked right by it the other night without a thought! And to take a picture of it, I had to get down on the floor on my back! How charming!! But well worth seeing! It has a host of Egyptian gods on it, as well as some of the “normal” zodiacal characters. So glad we were able to see it at long last! We also included two of the big three – Winged Victory and the Mona Lisa in Mom’s tour. We were heading to Venus de Milo when we all ran out of gas; stopped for water, coke and light refreshments! Whew! What a morning!

Back to the flat for lunch; sliced tomatoes with wonderful parmesan cheese on top, along with a baguette and the end of our wonderful Roquefort that we’d purchased as the Bastille Market on Sunday. Good to get things cleaned up, then made a big trash run! The elevator is acting up, making R very nervous! It now stops for some reason at floor 4 before it decides to make it all the way to 6 for us. R thinking it will eventually just stop, but I’m only hoping that we can get the luggage down in it tomorrow; that would really be a pain!

Back out and the 27 to the Opera. It’s such an incredibly beautiful building! If we were by ourselves we’d be going to the opera this evening to see Rossini’s “Italian in Algiers”. However, we’re not, and we don’t really have appropriate clothes…will have to prepare for the Opera Garnier; it’s quite a place! Did the non-guided tour; some beautiful spaces, that’s for sure! We are divided about the ceiling of the auditorium. It’s by Marc Chagall, and I love it and R hates it! Judge for yourself!! (But then I also like Chagall’s stained glass in the cathedral in Zurich!) Had a nice look around and then back on the bus and headed to the Eiffel Tower and a boat ride on the Seine.

A Bateaux Parisienne was just getting ready to depart on its one-hour tour, so on we went. It was REALLY getting chilly by this time, and naturally neither R nor I had jackets….brrrrrr! Lovely tour; nice day, but by the time we got off the boat, the black clouds were really rolling in! We wondered if our bus would get to us in time to avoid rain! But apparently the rain still hasn’t fallen, as it’s starting to get light again, and no drops! So! Had a nice boat ride, then back to the flat. Here until we head out for dinner…probably at a small place down the street, but we’ll see!

More later!
