It's always about the food!

Morning! Just wanted to do a brief update on last night’s dinner!
As much as we’d enjoyed the Brillant restaurant here in the hotel last night, we decided that tonight we would find something else. And we did!

Found the Café Veneto a few blocks down the street, with beautiful views over the old port. Walked up to the second floor. There is both an inside and an outside section – but with the breeze, it was definitely an inside kind of night.

Seated in front of a window – literally, next to two smoking chimneys! (You know, with most of Europe being smoke-free, as well as most places in the U.S. we are really spoiled! We knew we would have this problem, as neither Greece nor Turkey have smoking bans – but UGH! How awful! Definite need for showers in the morning, and added clothes to the laundry!!

However, back to dinner. I started with Cretan dakos – just like Italian bruschetta! Wonderful small thick slices of bread, topped by chopped tomatoes mixed with herbs and olive oil, and topped by goat cheese. They were absolutely YUMMY! R had what looked to be phyllo dough squares stuffed with spinach and cheese. They were great, but my dakos were even greater! For mains, I had a salad of prosciutto, sun dried tomatoes and fresh mozzarella. R had Labrus, a local fresh caught fish with sautéed spinach. The fish was very good, although a bit fishy tasting for my taste. R loved it! We didn’t want or need dessert, but the lovely waitress brought us a peeled and sliced apple – excellent, and a wonderful ending to a terrific meal! Had some local red wine – just excellent!

Back to the hotel and to bed. Tomorrow there will be NO alarm clock setting. Our plan is to get clothes over to the laundry at 9 a.m. and then head out on the coast road to Reythenmo. Strikes are planned in Athens, and we’ve seen signs for a rally here in Iraklion, but we’re hoping for the best!

Lots of love,
m
