Political Situation

I had an anonymous question about the political unrest, so am answering here as I can't find any other way! (Katy -- any help please?!)

We flew directly to Crete from Gatwick, and missed Athens entirely. We knew a general strike had been called for Wednesday, 5/5 and wondered how it might affect us. As it turns out, it didn't affect us at all. All the services that we as tourists used -- that is, museums, petrol stations, shops and restaurants were all open and running normally. We saw signs up in the main Heraklion square the day before announcing some sort of rally at 10:30 p.m. but to be honest, by then we were sound asleep! We do know that the Athens airport was closed that day, but on checking yesterday, everything appeared to be running on time.

We are scheduled to leave Crete in about 10 days and go to Athens for three days and then head to Istanbul, and honestly, we're playing it by ear and taking it day to day. If no new strikes are announced, we will probably go ahead with the plan. However, if things appear to be dicey and unsafe, we intend to fly directly back to Gatwick from Crete, overnight there and come out the next morning directly to Istanbul, missing Athens entirely.

Hope this helps!

Hello Margaret! I'm your "Anonymous" person as I'm having a terrible time with google and my password!!!
I'm quite frustrated, but "anonyous" works for me. Thanks for answering my question about the political unrest. Don is very nervous about anything like that. Hope you can continue with your trip as planned!
